What are PDF layers?
Named groups of content (formally Optional Content Groups) that a PDF viewer can show or hide — CAD drawing versions, language variants, annotation layers. Most everyday PDFs are flat and have none.
What does hiding a layer do?
It changes the layer's default state, so the content is hidden when the PDF opens. Readers can still turn it back on in their viewer's layers panel — it's a preference, not a deletion.
What does removing a layer do?
The layer's content is deleted from the page streams and the layer itself is removed from the file — gone for every reader, not just hidden. This can't be undone, so keep your original.
What if my PDF has no layers?
You'll see a note instead of a list — there's simply nothing to manage. This is the case for most PDFs.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
There's nothing to manage — a scan is one flat image per page, so no layers exist.
What happens to passwords and digital signatures?
Password protection is dropped (only do this on files you're allowed to modify), and any digital signatures are invalidated by the rewrite — check the result with our PDF Digital Sig. Verifier if that matters.
